Lorraine Hunt Lieberson

A short, few months ago, I received the upcoming schedule for the Chorale season which includes performances of Mahler's 3rd Symphony at Disney Hall with the LA Phil. If that weren't enough, the soloist was to have been Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. I adore her recordings of Mahler's 2nd and Handel arias. This would've been my first time hearing her live.. A few weeks ago, I read in the LA Times that she was cancelling all of her engagements for the coming year due to health problems and was devestated. This morning, however, I learned that she had passed away.

Aside from the fact that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was one of the most insightful and brave artists of her generation, the tragedy lies in the fact that she was only 52 and succumed to breast cancer, much, much too early.

Thanks to Alex Ross for the following text :
Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,
Fallet sanft und selig zu!

Sleep now, you weary eyes,
Softly and blissfully close.

— Bach, Cantata BWV 82
